Product Description
Zeiss Distagon T* 2,8/15 super wide angle lens The super wide angle Distagon T* 2,8/15 with an extra-large angle of view of 110 degrees in combination with a fast f/2.8 aperture, the lens enables the features for dramatic perspectives and performance demanded by the most ambitious landscape and architectural photographers. With a unique ability to capture events in a natural and extraordinary manner, it is also an ideal companion for advertising, journalism and commercial photography. Thanks to the extreme angle of view of the lens, the fore and background can be creatively emphasized in landscape and architecture photography. These applications will also benefit from the large depth-of-field, which provides a wide range of image sharpness from close-up up to infinity. With a close focus of 0.25m (10″) – combined with a wide angle view, photographers can work in tight spaces, while also allowing focus on close-up details. Distortion is extremely well controlled, producing naturally proportioned photographs which are not typical of many other super wide angle lenses. The Distagon T* 2,8/15 incorporates two aspheric lenses and special types of glass material with abnormal partial dispersion to provide an extraordinary correction of chromatic aberration. A floating elements design guarantees high image quality from close-focus through infinity. Like the other SLR lenses in the ZE and ZF.2 series, stray light and reflections are well controlled

After doing a bit of testing, I am stunned on how good this lens is. Most ultra wide angles suffer from CA and dull edges. This lens blows away any ultra wide angle made for canon or Nikon SLR mounts. Yes, the 14-24mm is great, but if you do most of your shooting on the 14mm get this lens.Do you hate to manual focus? Zeiss lenses are so perfectly calibrated at the factory, all you have to do is knock it to infinity and shoot away. As long as your 6 feet away from your object, you don’t have to move the focus ring, but you will want to because its the best focus ring you ever turned.Only bad thing, vignetting @ f2.8. But you know what? I add it in lightroom anyway, it gives images character. If your a nikon shooter with a D600 or D800, you have 14 stops of dynamic range anyway, just shoot raw and you can easily correct it. Also, Lightroom 4 has the profile for it.Note: I shoot with a D800E, I believe it out resolves my sensor…wow!I will update this review in a few months, I just need to find some good weather and time to go shooting again.

Although I own the mighty Nikon 14-24 zoom, I recently found myself a thousand miles from home without it, and in desperate need of an ultra-wide for my D800E. Luckily, there was a pro camera shop nearby, and I had a chance to rent one of these wonderful lenses.First, let me say that the construction quality of this lens is quite superb. Everything metal, everything precise and smooth as silk. At about 10% less weight than the Nikon 14-24, it certainly felt right at home on my D800E, and it handled at least as well as my 14-24.Something that will attract a lot of photographers is that the Zeiss accepts filters, while the 14-24 Nikon does not. I find the large front element on the Nikon lens causes me to treat it gingerly. I know it’s not true, but I fear even a fingerprint on that front element will be a disaster. With a 95mm filter protecting the Zeiss front element, I felt much more secure. Of course, there aren’t all that many filters available in the 95mm thin-mount size – but even just that UV filter acting as a lens protector makes a difference.A lens this wide doesn’t need a lot of manual focus due to the extreme depth of field. At f/5.6, you can set the lens to the hyperfocal distance of 4.4 feet, and you’ll have everything from 2.2 feet to infinity in adequate focus. Still, where you might want more precision, the manual focus is a joy to use.As for the image quality, I found the Zeiss to be slightly better than the Nikon 14-24 in a few areas. Most notable is chromatic aberration…on my 14-24, I can usually find some examples of color fringes if I look hard enough, especially at the widest end and at f/2.8. The Zeiss has virtually none of this, and to my eye, it has less overall distortion. Still, for a prime (non-zoom) lens, I was surprised to see the amount of vignetting in the Zeiss – maybe half a stop more than my 14-24 zoom. Of course, most of this can be corrected after the fact if needed.Otherwise, I found the Nikon and Zeiss lenses to be almost exactly the same in terms of sharpness, color saturation and so on. Both produce absolutely wonderful images, and you can’t go wrong with either. With the Nikon, you get a useful zoom and autofocus, and you get to save about $1000. With the Zeiss, you get better construction quality, somewhat more compact size, and marginally better optics in some dimensions.Bottom line is that I give the Zeiss high marks for construction quality and image quality, and although I’m not sure I’d trade my trusty 14-24 for one, this is one really wonderful lens if you like the ultra wide angle perspective.

The heading says it all. One of the few lens that is the equal to the Nikon d800 sensor. Color, contrast resolution…superb.
